Kid-Friendly Parks in Chester County, PA
Updated 2026-05-24 · Kid Friendly Chesco editors
Chester County is well-served by its park system — the county maintains a dozen-plus parks across its 760 square miles, and many townships add their own. The challenge isn't finding a park; it's knowing which ones have the right mix of playground equipment, shade, bathrooms, and enough space to actually tire a kid out. Here's what we'd recommend based on what's in the car and how much energy needs burning.

Anselma Station Playground
A quiet, underrated spot near the old Anselma Mill — big open field, good equipment, almost never crowded. The historic mill setting makes it feel more interesting than a standard township playground. Good toddler pick for the Chester Springs area.
- Parking
- Small free lot. Plenty of room.
- Crowds
- Rarely crowded. One of the more relaxed playground spots in the county.
- Hours
- Daily, dawn to dusk
- Good for
- Babies, Toddlers, Preschool, Kids
Exton·outdoor
Chester Valley Trail
Eighteen miles of paved, flat trail means you pick your distance — babies in strollers, toddlers on balance bikes, older kids on their own wheels. The Exton Park section is the best starting point for families: easy parking, bathrooms, and a playground right there if you need to cut it short.
- Parking
- The Exton Park trailhead off Park Road has a large lot and is the easiest family entry point. The Church Farm Lane trailhead also works but has less amenity. Both are free.
- Crowds
- Weekend mornings from April through October are popular — expect company but the trail is wide enough that it never feels crowded. Weekday mornings are very quiet. Winter use drops significantly.
- Hours
- Daily 8a–sunset
- Good for
- Babies, Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens
Downingtown·outdoor
Kardon Park (Downingtown)
A pleasant lakeside park in the middle of Downingtown that most people drive past without stopping. Easy, flat walking path around the water, good duck-feeding situation, and a relaxed vibe. Great complement to a Struble Trail walk — different enough to feel like a second destination.
- Parking
- Free lot on Pennsylvania Ave.
- Crowds
- Consistently low-key. Not a destination but a genuinely pleasant stop.
- Hours
- Daily, dawn to dusk
- Good for
- Babies, Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens

Mallard Park (Downingtown)
A solid neighborhood park that's genuinely good for younger kids — not the most elaborate playground equipment in the county but well-maintained, not overcrowded, and close to downtown Downingtown if you want to grab coffee or lunch after. Good first stop before or after the Struble Trail.
- Parking
- Small lot on Manor Ave. Usually available.
- Crowds
- Rarely packed. A reliably low-key option.
- Hours

- Crowds
- Gets busy on weekend afternoons when sports leagues are running. Arrive before 10am or after 5pm.

French Creek State Park
One of the most underused big parks in Chester County. 7,730 acres with 35+ miles of trails, a pool at Hopewell Lake, disc golf, fishing, and a nature center with seasonal programs. The pool admission is $13/person which is hard to beat for a full day outdoors. Download trail maps before you arrive — cell service is unreliable.
- Parking
- Multiple lots throughout the park. Free to enter the grounds; pool has a separate $13/person admission. Main lot near the visitor center is the best starting point.
- Crowds
- Far less crowded than Marsh Creek despite being larger. The trails in particular feel genuinely wild — you can go an hour without seeing another person. Pool gets busy on hot summer weekends.
- Hours
- Grounds open daily 8a–dusk. Pool open Memorial Day–Labor Day, Mon 11a–5:45p, Wed–Fri 11a–5:45p, Sat–Sun 11a–6:45p (closed Tuesdays).

Hibernia County Park
Worth the drive to Coatesville if your kids are past the stroller stage — 900+ acres of wooded trails, a playground, fishing pond, and some of the quieter hiking in the county. Trails are unpaved and can be rough, so leave the stroller home. Preschool and up with good shoes.
- Parking
- Main parking area off Park Road is free and rarely crowded. Multiple trailheads with their own small lots — the main entrance lot near the picnic area is the best starting point for families.
- Crowds
- Hibernia doesn't get the weekend crush that Marsh Creek does — it's off the beaten path enough that even on nice days you'll have space. One of the more underrated county parks.
- Hours
- Open daily, dawn to dusk
- Good for
- Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens

10Longwood Gardens / Cathy MatosKennett Square
Longwood Gardens
Worth every penny, and worth the drive down to Kennett Square. The children's garden is exceptional — water features kids can actually interact with, a treehouse, tunnel, and enough sensory input to keep even toddlers occupied for two hours. The indoor conservatory is the move in winter. Buy tickets in advance; walk-ups often sell out on peak days.
- Parking
- Large paid parking lot on site. Free for members.
- Crowds
- Fountain nights in summer are beautiful but packed. Spring weekdays are the best balance of blooms and manageable crowds. The children's garden is always busy — embrace it.
- Hours
- Daily 9a–6p (extended evening hours seasonally)
- Good for
- Babies, Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens

Marsh Creek State Park
One of the best parks in Chester County — 1,700 acres with a big lake, a solid playground, boat and kayak rentals, and more picnic space than you'll ever need. The playground near the main beach area is well-equipped and shaded in spots. Summer weekends get crowded; early morning visits are the move.
- Parking
- The main beach/boat launch area has a large lot that fills on hot summer weekends — arrive before 10 a.m. or you'll be circling. The east parking lot near the equestrian area is quieter if you're just hiking.
- Crowds
- Peak summer weekends are busy, especially around the beach. Spring and fall are dramatically calmer and just as beautiful. Weekday mornings are the sweet spot year-round.
- Hours
- Open daily, 8a–dusk
- Good for
- Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens

Nottingham County Park
Three separate playgrounds calibrated for different ages, a duck pond, and hiking through genuinely unusual terrain — the serpentine barrens are unlike anything else in Chester County. Free, uncrowded, and underrated. The toddler playground near the main entrance is well-designed; older kids gravitate to the larger structure.
- Parking
- Main lot off Park Road is free and typically uncrowded — this park doesn't get the overflow that some others do. Easy access from the parking area to all three playground sections.
- Crowds
- One of the least crowded county parks we've visited. Weekend afternoons bring families but it never feels packed. The duck pond is the perennial draw for toddlers.
- Hours
- Daily 8a–dusk
- Good for
- Toddlers, Preschool, Kids, Tweens, Teens
Phoenixville·outdoor

Struble Trail
A compact, paved trail that runs along Brandywine Creek — genuinely beautiful, flat, and stroller-friendly. The Norwood Road trailhead has easy parking and bathrooms nearby. Short enough that you won't need to negotiate a retreat, long enough to feel like a real outing.
- Parking
- The Norwood Road parking area is the easiest with kids — right off the main road, free, and close to the trail entrance. Don't confuse it with the trailhead further east, which has a smaller lot.

- Hours
- Open daily, sunrise to sunset
