Best Kid-Friendly Playgrounds in Chester County, PA
Updated 2026-05-24 · Kid Friendly Chesco editors
Chester County has a lot of playgrounds. Most of them are fine. A handful of them are genuinely great — modern equipment, real shade, bathrooms that aren't an afterthought, and enough variety that kids don't hit the wall in 20 minutes. Here's how we'd rank what's worth the trip versus what's a convenient backup.
What makes a great Chester County playground
Equipment age-range matters more than most guides admit. A playground with one structure that tops out at 6 feet is useless for a 2-year-old and boring for an 8-year-old. The best ones in Chester County have clearly separated zones — toddler-scale equipment on one side, bigger climbing structures on the other — so you're not chasing a toddler away from something they'll fall off of.
Shade is the other thing most lists ignore. A playground with zero tree cover in July is a 20-minute visit. Lionville, Hibernia, and Nottingham all have meaningful shade. Many smaller township playgrounds don't.
Splash pads vs. pools
If you have kids under 6, splash pads are almost always better than pools. No swim diapers, no sunscreen drama at the water's edge, kids can be fully independent. Lionville Community Park in Exton has the best free splash pad in the county — it runs June through August and is genuinely worth building a morning around.
Parking and crowds
Most Chester County playgrounds have free parking. The ones that get crowded on summer weekends: Lionville (especially splash pad season), Marsh Creek, and Kerr Park in Downingtown. All three are better before 10am or after 4pm on Saturdays in July and August.
Nottingham County Park in the south county almost never gets crowded, even on perfect weather weekends. Worth the extra drive if you want space.
Tips for first-time visitors
- Bathrooms: Lionville, Nottingham, Marsh Creek, and Hibernia all have them. Many smaller township playgrounds don't — check before you go with a toddler.
- Strollers: Most of these parks have paved paths to the playground. Nottingham and Hibernia have gravel/grass near equipment.
- Dogs: Chester County County parks (Hibernia, Nottingham) allow leashed dogs. State parks (Marsh Creek) also allow leashed dogs. Township parks vary.
